At just 19 years old, Anne Albert Gulamali is already making strides as an innovator and changemaker. Her journey began when the Apps and Girls team visited her school to introduce the GSI program. Drawn by her curiosity and passion for technology, Anne eagerly joined the program to explore the world of innovation and STEM, despite studying Arts subjects (HKL) in her A-level studies.
In the program, Anne chose to join the AI and Machine Learning class from three available options: Web and Application Development, Robotics, and AI and Machine Learning. There, she learned programming in Python, machine learning, and how to incorporate AI into real-world solutions. Through her active participation, Anne’s confidence grew as she discovered the power of innovation to address societal challenges.
“GSI boosted my confidence as it raised my awareness of various innovations, such as using technology to address problems,” Anne shared.
During the program, Anne particularly enjoyed pitching and programming using AI. The program instilled in her the ability to effectively present her ideas to investors or potential users of her innovations.
“The pitching skills I gained will help me in the future when I need to address an idea or business to an investor,” she noted.
The program also improved Anne’s academic performance and deepened her interest in STEM. “Knowing more about STEM helps improve my concentration and accuracy,” she explained, highlighting how these subjects, once intimidating, now feel manageable with dedication.
During the program, Anne’s creativity flourished when she teamed up with her peers to develop innovative business ideas. Through research, Anne’s team identified several challenges faced by farmers, including difficulties in assessing seed quality, a lack of guidance on crop cultivation practices, insufficient knowledge of nutrient requirements for different crops, and challenges in monitoring plant health. In response, they developed a mobile application using AI to tackle these agricultural challenges, aiming to support farmers, boost the national economy, and improve farming practices. This innovative solution earned her team fourth place in a competitive pitching event, an experience Anne described as both challenging and inspiring.
Anne’s time with the GSI program has been transformative. Inspired by her experiences, she shifted her career aspirations from becoming a diplomat to pursuing a career as a data analyst, where she can combine her love for coding and AI. She credits the program with changing her perception of STEM subjects, showing her that they are not impossibly difficult but rather achievable and rewarding with hard work and determination.
Reflecting on her journey, Anne wholeheartedly praises the Apps and Girls GSI program for its role in transforming students into innovators capable of solving real-world challenges.
